Adult ADHD treatment in Houston & across Texas
What does adult ADHD actually look like?
You can be at home or at work and start noticing that you do not complete tasks on time. Piles of laundry, dishes that are not cleaned, or papers to review are left unattended. Tasks that are more tedious become even more difficult to do.
People can become easily distracted over minimal things. Frustration tolerance becomes minimal too. Planning is also a difficult task. You procrastinate until the last minute and avoid starting projects.
Someone has probably told you that you are disorganized and have difficulties managing your time or deadlines. People often forget or misplace things; those glasses or keys are nowhere to be found.
Some adults can also have difficulties with quiet activities. They often feel restless, or need to move constantly or change positions. You could take over a conversation without letting someone else finish. People can also have impulsive spending and rush through things without thinking about potential outcomes.
At Tentie Psychiatry we make sure to carefully assess your symptoms and how they affect your daily life, and to understand you as a person, in order to provide the most accurate assessment of your situation and to offer the best treatment possible.
When is it time to see a psychiatrist?
- You are easily distracted, cannot complete tasks on time, and this affects your daily life.
- You are starting a new job, or need to study or perform something that requires your full attention, and you start building up frustration because you cannot seem to perform at your expectations.
- Others are concerned that you seem impulsive, restless or fidgety, with poor frustration tolerance.
- You keep losing your glasses, car keys or important paperwork, and this is taking important time away from your day.
Treatment options
Several medications have good response evidence as core treatment of adult ADHD. Non-stimulant and stimulant medications are often prescribed and can be crucial in the treatment plan. The goal of treatment is to reach the best level of functioning and to be able to manage daily tasks and activities in the most efficient way possible.
The right choice of medication depends on a careful review of your history and of previous medication trials with good outcomes or unwanted adverse effects. Good sleep, physical activity, keeping an activity planner and establishing daily routines are great contributors to your recovery.
All treatment options are carefully reviewed with you, and you will have ample time and understanding to make the right decisions without feeling pressured.

Frequently asked
Do I need to have formal testing before being prescribed medications for ADHD?
This depends on your particular case. Adult ADHD is a clinical diagnosis and can be diagnosed with a careful evaluation of your symptoms. In some circumstances, other conditions such as anxiety, depression or mood issues can significantly contribute to difficulties with attention, lack of focus and fidgetiness.
At Tentie Psychiatry we make sure to get a thorough, careful assessment of your symptoms to reach the most accurate diagnosis. If necessary, we can refer you for a comprehensive adult ADHD evaluation.
